Designing a Page and Adding Basic Content for Your Group

Go Directly to the Web Application Form

First Steps:

The first stage is to brainstorm about your group or activity, and jot down keywords only. It is best not to try to organize a page or set of interlinked pages right away.

One good strategy is to get a sheet of plain paper and turn it sideways. With a pencil, write down words and phrases about your group or activity as they come to you, and be deliberate only about not putting them in any sort of order. No lists. Just a sort of cloud of ideas. Then put the sheet down for a day or two, and organize the ideas only after you come back with that break in between. Only once you have organized these ideas should you proof that organization, asking whether it answers the basics of Who, What, When, Where, How and Why.

Text, Images and Design:

Text--

Groups are asked to provide their own text content. Saving text to a 3.5 inch floppy disk as a plain text file--not HTML or Word--is best. Just keying your content into Word Pad in Windows is probably the easiest, and certainly the cleanest way, technically, to do this. Saving a Word or other word processor document as plain text will also work, but sometimes causes problems that result in delays.

Images--

If you have digital images, they can be dropped off, together with layout sketches if you want to include those, at the main parish office. CDs and zip disks are the media types we can support. We can also scan images such as photographs, and digitally photograph paintings, but this will naturally make the turn around time a bit longer.

Design--

There is a basic template for St. William of York web pages--a sort of jacket that unifies the site with consistent color and navigation elements. Beyond this jacket, pages can be customized to suit the needs of groups. All pages need to be kept to a reasonable size limit because of the limits on our server space. Your tech liaison can be reached through the main parish office, and will be glad to talk over the possibilities with you. If your groups does not yet have a tech liaison, please contact the main parish office to request one.

All elements of all pages--text, images and design--are naturally subject to the approval of the pastor.
